Lakshmi ji wanted Vishnu ji to live in his residence Vaikuntha only . Therefore she went to demon king Bali and tied him Rakhi. Moved by the gesture he asked her, to ask him for any gift to which she asked him to let Vishnu return to Vaikuntha which he accepted.

Therefore Raksha Bandhan has deep roots in our ancient culture with various stories centered around it.
